Adolph Herman W. Weiss and Mary Elizabeth Middlemass Weiss

     Adolph Herman W. Weiss, son of Frederick Heindrich Adolph Weiss and Ferdinande Lehman Weiss, was born circa 1853 in Hamburg, Germany.  He is my paternal great great granduncle.  I have also seen his name written Adolphe Hermann W. Weiss and Adolphus.  To date I do not know what the "W" in his name stands for.

     I have had a difficult time researching Adolph and his family, not finding any information past a directory in 1883.  Did they leave the UK?  There is an Adolph Weiss who immigrated to the United States and lived in Massachusetts during the time frame; however, the information does not match my granduncle.

      The 1861 census is the first document I have found in the UK for the Weiss family.

Adolph H. W. Weiss, son, male age 8 1/2, dock laborer--son, born in Hamburg, Germany.

Ferdinand Weiss, daughter crossed out and replaced by son, age 1 1/2, dock laborer--son, born in Hamburg, Germany.  This is a daughter and my paternal great great grandmother.

     Curious as to whether Adolph, age 8 1/2 was actually working on the docks.  Children, at that time, were not to work under age ten; however the laws seem to be for textile, mining, various factory workers.  I suppose Adolph could have been doing errands and helping with easier jobs on the docks at age eight.  Or, for some reason the enumerator just dittoed the employment of his father down the family list.  Certainly, young Ferdinande, Adolph's sister was not working at age 1 1/2.

     The Weiss Family lived a street away from the main business street (Church Street) in West Hartlepool in 1861.  This area was also within walking distance to the Hartlepool docks.

     On November 27, 1870, Adolph's father, Frederick Heindrich Adolph Weiss, died at their home on Victoria Terrace.  Frederick Weis was only forty-two years old when he died from bronchopneumonia.  Adolph became "the man of the family" at age eighteen.

Ferdinande Weiss, head of family, widow, female age 49  not employed, born in Hanover (Germany).  Living in a house.  Reading between the lines, Ferdinande was indeed employed.  She was running a boarding house.  Perhaps her daughter was assisting her mother with some of the daily chores as well as employment as a dressmaker.

     The people enumerated on the next page of the 1871 census are three boarders and Adolph's sister, Ferdinande Weiss.  Of interest to me, one of the boarders, Christian Olesen married Adolph's sister, Ferdinande Weiss and they are my paternal great great grandparents.

     The Weiss family continued to live on Victoria Terrace following Frederick's death.  Victoria Terrace is an extension of Church Street.  One side of the street would have had a view of water. Today, there are not many houses on Victoria Terrace and the water side is mostly open.  

     Adolph was apprenticed out to an outfitter by 1871.  I google searched that particular apprenticeship and found nothing; however, what I did find was that an outfitter made clothes for hunting.  I was thinking that he was apprenticed to learn to make clothes for the general public. 

     A very precious piece of my family history that has been saved for almost 149 years.  Little did Ferdinande and Adolph know the remnants of this birthday gift would have been saved and in the hands of a descendant in 2021.  The birth date given for Ferdinande Weiss on the 1861 UK census is incorrect  according to other records, as well as that she was a son.  Her birth was November  14, 1855.  This gift was given by her brother to commemorate her seventeenth birthday.

     Adolph Weiss, age twenty-five married Mary Elizabeth Middlemass, age twenty-two at All Saints Church, located in Stranton, West Hartlepool on September 19, 1876.  Adolph had moved from West Hartlepool and was living in Sunderland, north of West Hartlepool and employed as a drapers assistant. Mary Elizabeth was living with her parents, George and Jane Ridsdale Middlemass in West Hartlepool. The witnesses were Adolph's brother-in-law, Christian Olesen and Mary Elizabeth's father, George Middlemass.

     On May 22, 1888, Adolph's mother, Ferdinande Lehman Weiss, died at age sixty-two at her home in West Hartlepool.

     Adolph and Mary Elizabeth's son, William Ernest Weiss died in 1882.  Was William their only child.  The baptism records on the Durham website only show one Weiss baptized and the date is too early for Adolph and Mary Elizabeth.  There are two possibilities with question marks on the list.  I have not thrown a credit card on this website, so I cannot say whether these two babies were born to this family.  Unfortunately, both died as as infants.

     The 1883 Kelly's Directory is the last piece of information I have on Adolph and Mary Elizabeth Middlemass Weiss.  They live at 2, 3 and 3 1/2 High Street East in Sunderland.  Adolph is employed as an outfitter.  It is very likely that the Weiss' lived at one of the addresses and his shop was one of the others.  Perhaps the 3 1/2 is an apartment above a shop at 3 High Street.

Addendum to the Family of Frederick Heindrich Adolph Weiss and Ferdinande Lehman Weiss

     

     In 2015, I blogged about my paternal great great great grandparents, Frederick Heindrich Adolph Weiss and Ferdinande Lehman Weiss.  The blog was entitled Weiss Family of West Hartlepool, England.  In the past five years, more information has come to light.  Adding European search to my Ancestry account and a subscription to British newspapers has given me a new research outlet.  I apologize if some of the information in this blog is also located in the one written in 2015.  I am trying to toggle between the two to keep the information in 2021 new.

     John Street in Hartlepool today is an alleyway where folks park their cars.  The side of the street with buildings appear to be the back end of the building not the entrance.  Perhaps the Weiss house was located on the side of the street where there is a fence.  The front side of the buildings are actually businesses and apartments located on Church Street many of which look to be in a state of rehabilitation.   After looking at the map at the end of the blog, back in 1861, John Street was a residential street between Lynn Street and George Street.  It appears that the street now called John was an alley between the the back of the buildings above and the fence.  John would have been the street behind the fencing.

     Between 1861 and Frederick's death on November 27, 1870 the Weiss family moved to a house on Victoria Terrace.  Reposting Frederick's death certificate.  Frederick died at age forty-two from broncho-pneumonia at his home.  His employment is listed as a brokers clerk.  The website, Hartlepool Then and Now, has an article regarding ship broking and that there was an agency in Hartlepool.  Another website lists the job description of a ship broker, "The main purpose of a ship broker is to act as specialist intermediaries/negotiators between ship owners and charters to arrange ocean transport of goods and commodities by sea, the employment of a vessel to buy/sell ships on behalf of his client."

     Relocated after it was hidden in the Weiss file.  In 2006 a very helpful Hartlepool researcher sent me this information.  Since I forgot about it, I do not know if I ever looked up the actual obituary when I had membership to the British newspaper website.

     The house on Victoria Terrace must have been large enough to hold the family and an additional three boarders.  I imagine it is the same residence that Ferdinande's husband died in months earlier.

     I opened google map and searched Victoria Terrace.  It connects to Church Street, which is the main/business street in that portion of town.  Most of the housing units on Victoria Terrace have been destroyed.  There are a few; however, they look newer than 1871.  When my brothers and I visited Hartlepool in 2003, we wandered around this area.

     Of note, my single paternal great great grandparents, Christian Invart Olesen and Ferdinande Weiss, were living in the same household.  They married on August 30, 1874, probably in Christ Church.  My paternal great great grandmother, Ferdinande (also known as Ferdinanda, Ann and Annie) did not make a very wise choice in husbands as I found numerous articles in Hartlepool newspapers of Christian Olesen going bankrupt, stealing and making threats.

     One such threat was against his mother-in-law, Ferdinande Lehman Weiss.  Christian Olesen was brought up on charges for threatening language against Ferdinande, broke open the door to her house and threatened to kill her son, Adolph Weiss.  Christian did not appear at court.  He was at the Royal Hotel.  Perhaps his wife, Ferdinande's daughter had thrown him out.

     Google map searching, there are no houses remaining on Reed Street.  The houses standing today on Lynn Street were probably built after 1881.  No houses are left on Reed Street.  At the far end are a few factory buildings.

Ferdinande Lehman Weiss Death Certificate

     On May 22, 1888, Ferdinande Lehman Weiss, age sixty-two, died at her home, 20 Scarborough Street, West Hartlepool.  Cause of death was dropsy, today called edema, puffiness caused by excess fluid trapped in tissue.  Secondary cause was cardiac disease.  I do not know where Frederick and Ferdinande Weiss are buried in the Hartlepool area.

     I seem to be finally getting around to blogging about my Olesen roots.  To be fair, I have only had bits and pieces of research until recently, especially on the two who remained in West Hartlepool, England.

     This lady, Ferdinande Weiss Olesen, did immigrate to the United States and lived with several of her adult children in Aliquippa and Monaca, Beaver County, Pennsylvania area.  She is my paternal great great grandmother.

     So many names.  It is somewhat difficult to actually know what her first name was.  I have seen Ferdinande, Ferdinando, Ferdinanda.  Nickname--Ann, Anne, Annie.  Comparing the documents I have found to date, it appears that my great great grandmother was called Ferdinande in England and it changed to Ferdinanda when she lived in the United States.  When she signed her marriage license, it was Ferdinande.

    Ferdinande was born on November 14, 1855 in Hamburg, Germany.  Her parents were Frederick Heindrich Adolph Weiss and Ferdinande Lehman. She joined brother, Adolph Herman W. Weiss. I do not know when the Weiss family immigrated to England, and in particular to the town of Hartlepool, They are enumerated as residents there on the 1861 census.  Oddly, Ferdinande is listed as 18 months old on that census, which would make her birth date about 1859 and not 1855.  Later census reports and her marriage license show her birth year to be 1855.

      Ferdinande's father was employed in various shipping positions in Hartlepool, which was an important business industry during the Victorian era to this active port town.  It also appears that the Weiss family had boarders in their home for additional income.  The boarders were also involved in the shipping industry.

     On November 27, 1870, when she was fifteen, Ferdinande's father died.  To provide income for the family following his death, son Adolph was employed as an apprentice to an outfitter and Ferdinande worked as a dressmaker.  Additionally, three male boarders were living in their home on Victoria Station, Stranton, West Hartlepool, England.  One of the three, Christian Invart Olesen, married Ferdinande four years later.

     On August 30, 1874 Christian and Ferdinande married at Christ's Church, West Hartlepool, England.  The marriage license gives a glimpse into my family genealogy.  Both of the father's names are listed for the newly weds.  The two people who signed as witnesses are Ferdinande's brother, Adolph Weiss, and Mary Middlemass  This couple married two years later.  Both Christian and Ferdinande were literate and could spell their name.  Of note:  My paternal great great grandmother's name is spelled Ferdinande with the final e written over.

     Seven children were born to Christian and Ferdinande:

1. Frederick Adolph Olesen, March 4, 1875-after 1946.
2. Elizabeth Ferdinande Olesen, October 16, 1876-October 11, 1961.  Married John George Hughes.  My paternal great grandparents.
3. Christian William Olesen, March 18, 1880-December 1, 1946.
4. Emily Maud Olesen, April, 1883-July 25, 1958.  Married Rowland Richards and Peter Leo Brown.
5. Adolph Heindrich Weiss Olesen, April 27, 1885-Jan 24, 1901.
6. George Invart Olesen, December 4, 1887-December 1888.
7. Ernest Alfred Olesen, April 19, 1891-After 1947.  Married Ann Wanless.

     From various newspaper articles found in both Hartlepool and Middlesbrough, England, it appears that Ferdinande did not lead a calm domestic life.  Her husband, Christian's ship chandler business, was bankrupt by 1877.  Several articles indicate that he had a volatile temper that lead him to serve time doing hard labor.  Her eldest son was also in trouble with the law, brought before the local court and served time doing hard labor. One 1894 article exposed him as threatening her and the police were summoned. She also had to deal with the sorrow of losing to young sons.

     Ferdinande's husband died on October 17, 1892 from somewhat mysterious circumstances.  From newspapers articles, he left for work in good health, stopped at the Victoria Hotel for a whiskey while waiting to catch a train for Middlesbrough.  Before he could enjoy his drink he dropped over dead. The cause of death was ruled syncope.

     On March 19, 1898, George Henry Hughes, Ferdinande's first grandchild was born, in West Hartlepool, England, to her daughter Elizabeth Ferdinande Olesen Hughes and her husband John George Hughes.  This is my link to the family.  George Henry Hughes is my paternal grandfather and John George Hughes and Elizabeth Olesen Hughes are my paternal great grandparents.

     The Olesen family lived at two different residences on Bolton Street during the 1890's and early 1900's.  To provide for the family, Ferdinande worked outside the home.  Son, Bill was employed as a sawyer (a person who saws lumber) and daughter Emily, a dressmaker.

     My guess is that this photo was taken in the front yard at 7 Bolton Street in West Hartlepool.  Unfortunately, Bolton Street no longer exists, so I was not able to see the house when I visited in 2003.

Immigration of the Olesen's to the United States

     On May 8, 1906, Ferdinande's daughter, grandchild and son in law (the Hughes family) left Liverpool, England for the United States.  Bill, Emily, Ernest were still living at home.  A year later, Elizabeth and nine year old son, George Henry returned to West Hartlepool for a visit.  In July 1910, Elizabeth Hughes returned to West Hartlepool and her brother, Bill Olesen accompanied her back to the United States. At that time Ferdinande was living at 73 South Parade in West Hartlepool.  

    On February 26, 1920, son Ernest (Ernie) along with his wife Ann and young son, Oscar sailed from Liverpool, England for the United States and made their home in the New York City area.

     Bill Olesen crossed the pond and prepared for the final crossing of the Olesen's.  This included Ferdinande, her daughter Emily Olesen Richards accompanied by Bill Olesen aboard the Aquitania on July 1920 leaving Liverpool and arriving in New York City on July 24, 1920.  Emily was detained due to illness.  The family stayed with Ernest Olesen and family in Brooklyn until Emily was well and able to travel to Woodlawn (now Aliquippa, Pennsylvania).  Son, Frederick Olesen remained in England.

     It must have been a full house at 131 Spring Avenue, Woodlawn, Pennsylvania.  The house was owned by Jones Laughlin Steel Company (a company home) and rented to John George Hughes.  In the house lived, John, Elizabeth and George Hughes; Bill Olesen; Ferdinande Olesen; Emily Olesen Richards and her husband Rowland Richards.

     Following the death of John George Hughes on May 20, 1921, the Olesen family remaining at 131 Spring Avenue were Elizabeth Olesen Hughes, Bill Olesen and Ferdinande Olesen.  From the 1940 United States census, it appears that the group remained at the home in Aliquippa at least until 1935. Bill Olesen was also employed by J&L Steel.

     By the 1940 United States census the family had moved to 1298 Washington Avenue, Monaca, Beaver County, Pennsylvania.  Stories and memories of this house have been supplied to me by my Aunt Faith, who lived here from about 1946-1950.  She does remember both her great grandmother Ferdinande Weiss Olesen, her Grand Uncle Bill Olesen and Grand Aunt Emily Richards/Brown.

     On February 15, 1942, Ann Olesen died at home in Monaca, Pennsylvania at the age of 87.  She is buried in the Hughes family plot, Woodlawn Cemetery, Aliquippa, Beaver County, Pennsylvania.

Weiss Family of West Hartlepool, England

     

      It wasn't until I was working on updating my genealogy website that I realized that I never blogged about my paternal third great grandparents, Frederick Heindrich Adolph Weiss and Ferdinande Lehman.  There are still so many missing pieces to their story and hopefully some descendant will wander onto Flipside and email me.  

     I have no photos of these ancestors....only census reports and death certificates.  

     Frederick, was born circa 1826 in Mecklenburg, Germany and married Ferdinande Lehman, born in Hanover, Germany circa 1827.  My guesstimate on the marriage is 1852 in Germany.

     

     Two known children were products of the marriage.  Adolphus Hermann W. Weiss born about 1853 in Hamburg, Germany and my paternal great great grandmother Ferdinande Weiss who was born November 14, 1855 in Hamburg, Germany.

     By 1861, the Weiss Family was living in West Hartlepool, England as evidenced by the 1861 United Kingdom Census Report.  Their home was at 3 John Street in the ecclesiastical district of Christ Church.  At that time Frederick was employed as a dock laborer.

     On December 27, 1870, at age forty two, Frederick Weiss died at his home on Victoria Terrace, West Hartlepool, England of pneumonia.  The place of burial is not listed on the certificate; however, most people who died before 1912 were buried in North Cemetery.  It is interesting to note that at the time of his death, Frederick was a brokers clerk.  In 1874, when Frederick's daughter, Ferdinande, married Christian Olesen, she listed her father's occupation as banker.

     Following her husband's death, Ferdinande continued to live in the home on Victoria Terrace with her two children, Adolph and Ferdinande.  Listed in the 1871 United Kingdom Census report, Ferdinande is operating a lodging house in her home and her children are both employed.  Adolph as an apprentice to an outfitter and Ferdinande as a dressmaker.  I was most surprised to find that one of the lodgers listed in the Weiss home was Christian Olesen, my paternal great great grandfather, who later married the younger Ferdinande Weiss.

     On the 1881 United Kingdom Census, Ferdinande at age fifty four, was living at 10 Lower Reed Street, Stranton.  Both of her children have married.  She is maintaining a lodging house with three man who are involved with the shipping industry and one young woman who is a servant in the home.  Undoubtedly someone to assist Ferdinande with the daily duties of running a lodging home.

     Ferdinande Lehman Weiss, age sixty two, died on May 22, 1888,  at 20 South Scarboro Street, West Hartlepool, England from dropsy--an old fashioned term for edema.  Contributing factors were cardiac issues.

     I have limited information on the Weiss' son, Adolphus Hermann W. Weiss.  From records I know he married Mary Elizabeth Middlemass, daughter of George Middlemass at All Saints Church, Stranton on September 19, 1876.  To this union was born a son, William Ernest Weiss, born in 1881 in Sunderland, Durham County, England and died in 1882 Were there other children?  Where did they go after 1883?
