George Oglevie and Jane Cannon Oglevie of Columbiana County, Ohio

Jane Cannon, daughter of Lindsey Cannon and Elizabeth Fife Cannon, was born circa 1819, probably on Lindsey's land in St. Clair Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.  Jane lived comfortably for the time period.  Her father operated a grist mill, distillery, saw mill and blacksmith shop in a village named for him, Cannons Mills.  Undoubtedly, she attended school nearby.  She probably helped her mother with the younger siblings and with housework.

Reverend William Reed of the Presbyterian Church, married twenty-four year old Jane Cannon and twenty-nine year old George Oglevie on April 15, 1843 in Columbiana County, Ohio.  George was the son of George Oglevie and Isabella Forsythe.

Three daughters were born in the next years.  Caroline Oglevie born 1843, Margaret Oglevie born 1848 and Isabella Oglevie born 1849.  The Oglevie's settled in Columbiana County, Ohio; therefore, these daughter were Ohioans.

Jane's husband, George Oglevie, died between 1850-1860.  She has moved in with her parents, who now own property and a farm in Section 29, Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.  Jane's daughter is missing from the enumeration.  In fact, I have not been able to locate her.  She would have been too young to marry.  I have not found burial records for George or his daughter, Margaret.

Jane and two daughters are living on their own.  Another daughter is MIA, Caroline Oglevie.  I have not been able to trace her.  She either died, married or moved away between 1860-1870.  I did have to google search mantua maker as I had no idea what occupation it was.  A mantua maker is a sewing pattern company specializing in women's clothing. The patterns are multi-sized.

Jane Oglivie, age 50, female, mantua maker, born in Ohio

Isabel Oglevie, age 21, female, school teacher, born in Ohio

Kate Oglevie, age 18, female, mantua maker, born in Ohio

Jane's youngest daughter, Katherine "Kate" Oglevie, at age twenty, married thirty year old, Thomas Gaylord Hawkins, on January 9, 1872 in Mahoning County, Ohio.  Thomas was the son of John A. Hawkins and Almira Crittendon Kemble Hawkins of Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.  Thomas was born on August 24, 1841 in Columbiana County, Ohio.

Jane Cannon Oglevie is MIA in 1880.  Her other three daughters have disappeared.  Daughter, Kate Oglevie Hawkins, stayed in Elkrun Township following her marriage until 1878.  The Hawkins family removed to Nebraska and  was living on a farm in Lancaster County, Nebraska on the 1880 Census.

Jane Oglevie, age 65, mother-in-law, widow, keeps house, born in Ohio, both parents born in Ohio

Jane may have been traveling to her daughter's home and was missed in the 1880 census report.  She continued to stay with her son-in-law and grandchildren following her daughter's death.

It appears that Jane Cannon Oglevie remained in Nebraska until her death, perhaps boarding with her son-in-law, taking care of the farmhouse and children.

Jane Cannon Oglevie, age seventy-seven, died June 20 1896 in Nebraska.  She wass buried at Bennet Cemetery, Bennet, Lancaster County, Nebraska and was honored with a substantial grave marker.

Thomas Gaylord, Hawkins owned property are at the southern most portion of Grant District.  He owned 240 acres.  Directly to the north, his son, Halsey La Peer Hawkins, owns 30 acres.  I underlined an F.K. Hawkins; however, I am unaware of who he is.

Thomas Gaylord Hawkins, age 79, died in Panama City, Panama on November 1, 1920.  He was visiting his married daughter, Blanche Hawkins Ilgen.  He was buried in Bennet Cemetery, Bennet, Lancaster County, Nebraska.

John March and Elizabeth Cannon March of Columbiana County, Ohio

Seventeen year old Elizabeth Cannon, daughter of Lindsey and Elizabeth Fife Cannon, married twenty-six year old, John March, on May 29, 1827 in Columbiana County, Ohio. They are my maternal second great-grandaunt and granduncle.  The Reverend William Reed of the Presbyterian Church performed the ceremony.  John was born about 1801 in Virginia to Henry March and Mary Hollinger March.

This 1814 Columbiana County, Ohio probate record outlines where the Marsh/March children lived following the death of their father, Henry March.  I do not know why they chose to live with other families as their mother Mary Hollinger March was still alive.  I also do not know if these five children were all that Henry and Mary raised, or if there were additional not named in the document.

Untangling the Columbiana County March's in the 1800's is a challenge.  At a minimum, the document above does link a Samuel, John, Phillip, Sarah and Catherine to Henry and Mary March.

There was also a Samuel March, brother to Henry, who relocated to Columbiana County, Ohio.  More about him later.

On the 1830 Ohio Federal Census, John March is enumerated directly above his father-in-law, Lindsey Cannon and in 1840, he is on the same page underneath Lindsey Cannon by several names.  Both census are from St. Clair Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.  A solid guess is that John is farming a piece of Lindsey's land or assisting with running the mill.

By 1840, John and Elizabeth had three children:
  1. Mary March born in 1830, St. Clair Township, Columbiana County, Ohio
  2. Thomas March born in 1834, St. Clair Township, Columbiana County, Ohio
  3. Henry March born in 1836, St. Clair Township, Columbiana County, Ohio
1850 Ohio Federal Census
St. Clair Township, Columbiana County
September 11, 1850

John March was a farmer, on his own land in St. Clair Township.  His father-in-law, had sold all his property in St. Clair Township, and perhaps, John purchased a piece of that land.  I also noticed that his brother, Samuel March was enumerated a few lines away and was employed as a blacksmith.  Lindsey Cannon's Mill had a blacksmith operation.  Perhaps, Samuel March was employed there although the mill was owned by someone else.

John March, age 49, male, farmer, value of real estate owned $1800, born in Virginia

Elizabeth March, age 40, female, born in Ohio

Mary March, age 19, female, born in Ohio

Thomas March, age 17, male, farmer, born in Ohio, attended school within the year

Henry March, age 13, male, born in Ohio, attended school within the year

John March, age, 9, male, born in Ohio, attended school within the year

Martha (Jane) March, age 7, female, born in Ohio, attended school within the year

Sarah (A.) March, age 5, female, born in Ohio

Three additional children were added between 1840-1850

  1. John March born 1841
  2. Martha Jane March born 1844
  3. Sarah A. March born 1846
All children were born in St. Clair Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.  Somewhere I must have seen that John and Elizabeth had a son named Lindsey March.  I have not been able to find any documentation on him.  If he existed, he must have been born and died in between census reports.

1860 Ohio Federal Census

June 2, 1860

John March, age 59, male, farmer, value of real estate $2100, value of personal estate $100 or $500,           born in Virginia

Elizabeth March, age 50, female, born in Ohio

Mary March, age 25, female, born in Ohio

Thomas March, age 23, male, farmer, born in Ohio

Henry March, age 21, male, farmer, born in Ohio

John March, age 18, male, born in Ohio

Martha J. March, age 16, female, born in Ohio

Sarah A. March, age 14, female, born in Ohio, attended school during the year

Ada March, age 5, female, born in Ohio

Is Ada March the daughter of John and Elizabeth?  Elizabeth would have been age forty-five when Ada was born.  I have not been able to trace Ada.  The March farm was located near the village of West Point.

This is an 1870 land ownership map of Madison Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.  John Marsh owns 151 acres in the southwest quarter of Section 2.  A Joseph March owns land directly to the west of John and a Samuel March to the south. I do not think Joseph is a member of the descendants of Henry Marsh and Mary Hollinger Marsh....unless they had a son named Henry.  I do not know if Samuel Marsh is John's brother, or from the other Marsh family.  I am adding here that Henry March, father of John, did have a brother, Samuel March, who relocated to Columbiana County and he had two sons named, Joseph and Samuel.  Further research.... Joseph March and Samuel  March on the map are sons of Samuel March and John's nephews.  WHEW!

Henry March, age, male, carpenter, born in Ohio

John March, age, male, works on farm, born in Ohio

Mary March, age, female, at home, born in Ohio

Sarah A. March, age, female, at home, born in Ohio

John has increased his estate by a little under $3000 in the past decade.  Wellsville listed as the post office is a mystery to me.  Wellsville is located down on the Ohio River and not in Madison Township.  I checked the Horace Mack book to see is there was a Wellsville in Madison and came up empty.  No Ada March from the 1860 census.  Mystery.

Mary March, age 49, daughter, at home, born in Ohio, Father born in Virginia and mother born in Ohio

Ella Stark, age 22, servant, born in Pennsylvania, both parents born in Pennsylvania

John March died in November, 1881on his farm in Madison Township, Columbiana County, Ohio at age eighty.  His last will and testament lists his son, John March, Jr. as the executor.  Monies are to be paid out to all of John's adult children and his wife, Elizabeth Cannon March will live on the farm until she dies.  John is to live an work the farm until his mother dies.

John March was buried at Carlisle Cemetery, Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.  Elizabeth Cannon March died on February 23, 1889 on the family farm, Madison Township, Columbiana County, Ohio at age seventy-nine.  She was buried beside her husband at Carlisle Cemetery.  Her parents, Lindsey Cannon and Elizabeth Fife Cannon are also buried there.

Children of John March and Elizabeth Cannon March:
  1. Mary March--born in June 1830, St. Clair Twp, Columbiana County, Ohio; died March 28, 1907, Madison Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.  Never married.

Lindsey Cannon and Elizabeth Fife Cannon of Columbiana County, Ohio

I have realized that I have written about my maternal Great Great Great Grandfather Lindsey Cannon in a fairly herky-jerky manner. I think it is time to finally put all the information in one place. Lindsey Cannon and Elizabeth Fife Cannon are my maternal 3x great grand parents. Sometimes Lindsey is spelled Lindsay and Cannon is spelled Canon. Then there is also the times that census readers call it Cameron.  A frequent research challenge of all genealogists--numerous name spellings.

History of Columbiana County, Ohio
Horace Mack
page 131

The four Cannon siblings, John, Lindsey, Matthew and Thomas, relocated from Fayette County, Pennsylvania to Columbiana County, Ohio, taking advantage of the April 15, 1800 Harrison Land Act.  Thomas Cannon is not mentioned in this article because he purchased land in Middleton Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.  Also, Matthew Cannon was not a single man as outlined in his blog on Flipside.

Various Ancestry sites list Thomas Cannon of Fayette County, Pennsylvania as the father of the four siblings.  He died in 1798, which may have been the trigger that caused his four sons to move west into Ohio.

Of interest to me is an Agnes Cannon who purchased land abutting John Cannon in Elkrun Township.  A Nancy Cannon is listed in the Horace Mack book, A History of Columbiana County, Ohio, page 132, as a householder in the area south of the Middle Beaver (River) in 1838.  Her name would have been Nancy Agnes Cannon, the name given to my maternal great great grandmother by my maternal 3xgreat grandparents, Lindsey and Elizabeth Fife Cannon.  I should mention that Elizabeth had a younger sister also named Nancy Agnes Fife.  John A. Cannon had two daughters which are not named and Thomas Cannon named a daughter Nancy.  Who was the Nancy Agnes Cannon purchasing adjoining land to John A.?  The men's mother?  A single sister?

Back to my maternal 3xgrest grandparents.

Lindsey purchased three pieces of land in Columbiana County in 1805 from the Steubenville Land Office.

On April 6, 1805, he purchased land owned by his brother, Matthew Cannon, in Columbiana County, Elkrun Township, Section 26, Certificate #1294.

On July 1, 1805, he purchased land in Columbiana County, Madison Township, Section 1, Certificate #1567.

On August 31, 1805, he purchased land in Columbiana County, Elkrun Township, Section 26, Certificate 1687.  This piece of property adjoined his brother, John Cannon's land, in Section 25 and added to the property he purchased from his brother in April.

Lindsey was not purchasing property from his home in Pennsylvania, he was living in Columbiana County, Ohio in 1805.  He was witness to what appears to be a will of John McMillian dated August 19, 1805.  Note:  Lindsay Cannon.

On May 2, 1809, in Columbiana County, twenty- nine year old Lindsey Cannon married nineteen year old Elizabeth Fife.  Elizabeth's parents were John Fife and Elizabeth Fife, first cousins who removed to Columbiana County, Ohio from St. Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.  The Fife property was in Madison Township.

The History of Columbiana County, Ohio
Horace Mack
page 128

In 1810, Ohio did not have a census; however, there was a tax list.  Lindsey is listed as owning 159 acres in Elkrun Township, Columbiana County in Section 26, once owned by Matthew Cannon.

On May 23, 1910 Lindsey Cannon paid in full on the property transferred to him by his brother, Matthew Cannon, in 1805, in the northeast quarter of section 26 in Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.

On August 10, 1811, Lindsey sold his land on the southwest quarter of Elkrun Township, Columbiana County to Christian Bowman.

Lindsey enlisted as an ensign in Captain John Ramsey's Company, Ohio Militia, Columbiana County, Ohio for the War of 1812 serving from August 25, 1812 to March 9, 1812.  Also underlined are three of Elizabeth Fife Cannon's brothers who served in this company.   Interesting that the pension was cancelled due to the fact that two different names for his wife were listed.  Elizabeth Cannon is Elizabeth Fife.

In numerous early county records, Marsh and March were used interchangeably.  I found this curious that John and Philip Marsh/March went to live with Lindsey Cannon following their father's death.  Lindsey's oldest daughter, Elizabeth Cannon married John March.  It would be of interest to me to know if John Marsh is John March who became Lindsey's son-in-law.

Lindsey was somewhat of a land ownership entrepreneur.  The 1816 Columbiana Tax report lists him as owning 160 acres in northeast section 11, of Madison Township.  He purchased this acreage from John Smith.

While Lindsey and Elizabeth Cannon were making their home in Madison Township, several children were born.
  1. Elizabeth Cannon--December 1809
  2. Margaret Cannon--1813
  3. Nancy Agnes Cannon--April 1817 (my maternal great great grandmother)

By 1818, Lindsey was purchasing properties in St. Clair Township.   He owned 221 3/4 acres in St. Clair Township, northwest section 7 purchased from William Crawford.

Additional children joined the Cannon family in St. Clair Township.

  1. Jane Cannon--1819
  2. Mary Cannon--October 16, 1821
  3. Matthew Cannon--1824
  4. John Cannon--1823
  5. Thomas Cannon--died at age 20

In 1821, Lindsey purchased 160 acres in St. Clair Township, northwest section 20 from George Wilson.  This was where Lindsey would make his living and raise his family with a village named after him, Cannons Mills.

The other pieces of property he owned in Elkrun and Madison Townships were probably sold; however, to date, I have not found documentation.

Lindsey owned both pieces of property in St. Clair Township from 1821-1831.

1900 Cannons Mills
After 1831, his life was focused at Cannons Mills, where he operated a grist mill, saw mill and distillery.  Although this photograph is decades after Lindsey and his family lived there, it gives a glimpse into the area.

In 1831, Lindsey's younger brother, Matthew Cannon, died in Elkrun Township. Lindsey and both his and Matthew's his brother-in-law, Joseph Fife, were administrators of the probate.

Lindsey Cannon was a justice of the peace and above is one marriage that he officiated. Also during the 1830s, Lindsey Cannon, Esq. was listed with a group of men from St. Clair Township who wrote a proposal to the state senators and congressmen outlining their displeasure with the Whigs in government. Lindsey was a democrat of the old Jeffersonian school.

Representative Citizens

William B. McCord
page 114

By 1838, Lindsey added an additional 60 acres to his property on the northwest quarter of Section 20 in St. Clair Township.

This 1837 court action regarding regarding a deed to Philip March lists the same sibling names as the 1814 guardianship notice above.  It was the reason I felt that the children in the guardianship were March not Marsh. Thomas Cannon, Lindsey's brother, married Catherine March.  Samuel March, Phillip's brother and wife Elizabeth.  John March married to Lindsey's daughter, Elizabeth Cannon.  Sphaar Dyke married to Sarah March.

The above newspaper biography of Lindsey Cannon outlines his rise and fall in Cannons Mills.  Unfortunately, his generous nature and a temperance movement contributed to the sale of his business and property.

Lindsey Cannon's property and the mill marked on a 1840 St. Clair map.  Five roads leading to other townships in Columbiana County pass through Cannons Mills.  Longs Run looks to be a feeder stream into the Little Beaver Creek.  Lindsey's grist mill was located on it and used it to power the mill.

Lindsey's 1840 Ohio census report lists:

1 male age 10-15--John Cannon, would have been age 11
1 male age 15-20--Matthew Cannon, would have been age 16
1 male age 20-30--possibly Thomas Cannon
1 male age 50-60--Lindsey Cannon

1 female age 5-10
1 female age 15-20--Jane Cannon, would have been age 20-21.  Only daughter not married
1 female age 40-50--Elizabeth Fife Cannon

Down, but not out, Lindsey, Elizabeth and two sons have relocated to Madison Township and are living and working on a farm by 1850.  I am not able to read the twenty-seven year old owner.  Lindsey and his son, Matthew are drovers, which are farmhands moving either cattle or sheep.

Lindsey Cannon, age 61, male, drover, born in Pennsylvania

Elizabeth Cannon, age 60, female, born in Pennsylvania

Matthew Cannon, age 25, male, drover, born in Ohio

John Cannon, age 23, male, drover, born in Ohio

Catherine Apple, age 18, female, born in Ohio

In March, 1855, John Cannon, Lindsey's son was taken to court by Sarah Armstrong for bastardy.  The case was settled in October, 1855.  A daughter, Malinda Ann Cannon, was born May 20, 1855.  I do not know if John and Sarah married.  In fact, I have not been able to follow John after this court document.  All I have is Armstrong genealogical document.  Fact or fiction.  If they were married as the genealogical document suggests, there would not have been a common pleas court document.

Lindsey, Elizabeth and son Matthew have returned to Elkrun Township by 1860. Lindsey has purchased his deceased brother, Matthew Cannon's, farm in the southeast quarter of section 29 in Elkrun Township. Matthew's widow, Jane Fife Cannon owned and was living there when the 1850 census was taken. My thesis is that she died between 1850-1860 and Lindsey purchased the property from her estate. A number of Elizabeth's Fife family were living nearby.

L (indsey) Cannon, age 81, male, farmer, value of real estate owned $3600, value of personal property owned $500, born in Pennsylvania

Jane ------, age 42, female, born in Ohio

Elizabeth ------, age 71, female, born in Ohio

Caroline ------, age 17, female, born in Ohio, attended school in past year

Isabel -------, age 15, female, born in Ohio, attended school in past year

Catherine ------, age 13, female, born in Ohio, attended school in past year

Matthew Cannon, age 36, farmer, born in Ohio

Untangling this enumeration.  Elizabeth is Lindsey's wife, Elizabeth Fife Cannon and she was born in Pennsylvania, not Ohio.  Jane is Lindsey and Elizabeth's widowed daughter, Jane Cannon Oglevie, who is enumerated with her parents in Elkrun Township following her husband's death after the 1850 census.  In 1850, George Oglevie and family lived in Elkrun Township.  He was a merchant and had $1000 in real estate. Caroline, Isabel and Catherine are Jane's daughters.  Matthew Cannon, is, Lindsey and Elizabeth's son.

1870 Ohio Federal Census
Elkrun Township, Columbiana County

In the decade since the last census, Matthew Cannon has married Elizabeth Hepburn and is the primary owner of the land on Section 29.  His parents are also living on the property, perhaps all in the same house.  Matthew and Elizabeth have two children and Matthew has added to the value of the farm and possessions.  Lindsey, at age ninety-one, continues to assist his son with farm labor.  The enumerator has listed the two Cannon men as separate families; however, I am unsure as to whether they have separate farm houses on the same property.

Lindsey Cannon, age 91, male, white, farmer, born in Pennsylvania, father foreign born (Scotland), male old enough to vote.

Elizabeth Cannon, age 81, female, white, keeping house, born in Pennsylvania, father foreign born (Scotland).

Matthew Cannon, age 41, male, white, farmer, value of real estate $6000, value of personal property $825, born in Ohio, male old enough to vote.

Elizabeth Cannon, age 33, female, white, keeping house, born in Ohio.

Alice Mary Cannon, age 3, female, white, born in Ohio

F Emmett Cannon, age 1, male, white, born in Ohio.

Andrew Scott, age 40, male, white, farm laborer, born on Ohio, male old enough to vote.

Lindsey Cannon died at his farm in Elkrun Township at ninety-two years of age, the day after Christmas, December 26, 1871.  The newspaper article above is all I have found.  No obituary.

Lindsey Cannon was buried at Carlisle Cemetery, slightly south west from his farm.  The photograph above, I took when my mother and I first visited the cemetery back in the fall of 1993.  We went back as a family on Christmas Eve, with a crowbar and my brother, Ken, up righted his maternal 3x great grandfather's tombstone.  The shadow of the crowbar is shown on the tombstone picture.  I was not aware at that time, that Lindsey was my direct ancestor.  I thought I was connected to his brother John A. Cannon.  I definitely need to return to the Carlisle Cemetery to try to get better images of all my ancestors buried there.

Lindsey's widow, Elizabeth Fife Cannon died at the Cannon farm in Elkrun Township on October 14, 1873.  She was eighty-four years old.

Elizabeth was buried beside her husband at the Carlisle Cemetery, Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.  The cemetery is located alongside Roller Coaster Road.

A Wrap

All four Cannon brothers were early Ohio Pioneers.  Lindsey was well known and well regarded by the residents in numerous communities.  He was active in local politics, was a justice of the peace and an entrepreneur in business.  His village, Cannons Mills had a blacksmith, timber saw operation, grist mill and distillery.  Financially he did well.  His downfall was his trust in his fellow neighbors, lending them credit on purchases at the mill.  Also discontinuing the distilling of alcohol, probably put a dent in his income.  Lindsey cashed out, sold his property, went to work for a livestock farmer, rebuilt enough capital to purchase his deceased brother's Elkrun property and began again.

The Cannon brothers lived in Columbiana County while Native Americans were also settled in various areas.  There were no roads, homes or tilled land.  They helped build the townships, roads and canals.  They worked to form the local governments, marry the young and older couples, and provide residents with grain.  I am proud to call them all my relations and Lindsey and Elizabeth Fife Cannon my ancestors.
