Carlisle Cemetery, Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, Ohio

     Back at the infancy of my genealogy search, I located the cemetery where some of my maternal ancestors are buried.  Unfortunately, it was in my infancy and my photographs of the tombstones reflect it.  Also, unfortunately, I have not taken the time in thirty-two years to correct it. 😞

     On Sunday, October 10, 1993, My mother, Martha Jean Stark Hughes and I, drove to Columbiana County, Ohio to find the Carlisle Cemetery in Elkrun Township, Section 29.  Using a township road map, finding the cemetery was easy.  

     We were looking for the Orr and Cannon family final resting places.  I located the information using the Columbiana County Genealogical Societies very informational cemetery books.

     The Carlisle Cemetery is located in Section 29, Elkrun Township on County Road 900(Roller Roaster Road), just north of the intersection of County Road 895 (Cream Road).  My maternal great great great great grandfather, Joseph Orr's property, was very close by.  

     

     We located the Orr family under a very large tree on the back right hand side of the cemetery.  My maternal great great great grandfather, Joseph Orr's was broken off its base and was propped up against the tree with the written side facing the tree.  It was with a great deal of effort that Mom and I were able to turn it around.  My maternal great great great grandmother, Jane Kelso Orr was beside her husband.  

     Looking at the picture, to the left of Joseph and Jane are two of their grandsons who died from their participation in the Civil War, Joseph Frederick Orr and Benjamin Franklin Orr.

     Next we located the grave sites of Lindsey Cannon and his wife Elizabeth Fife Cannon.  At that time I thought they were my maternal great great great grand aunt and uncle.  Further research years later proved they were actually my great great great grandparents.

     Lindsey's tombstone was flat on the ground face down.  There was no way Mom and I could pry it up.  That effort waited until the family came on Christmas Eve.  The males, with the help of a crowbar, lifted it up and propped it against the tombstone base.

     Another member of my Cannon family, Elisabeth Cannon March and two members of her family are buried in the cemetery.  Elizabeth is a daughter of Lindsey and Elizabeth Fife Cannon, and is my maternal great great grand aunt.

     Jane Kelso Orr died on December 28, 1847 in Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, Ohio at age fifty-three.  She is buried beside her husband, Joseph Orr, in the Carlisle Cemetery, Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.

  There are two readings of the cemetery.  The 1900 reading gives the information above, although Jane is listed as Mary Orr

Brick Wall--Death of Nancy Agnes Cannon Orr McCormick

     

     Amy Johnson Crow has a 52 Ancestors Week blog challenge which I have decided to give a try for the second year. 

     The prompt for week # 11 is Brick Wall.

     For decades I have been trying to find any information on the death of my maternal great great grandmother, Nancy Agnes Cannon Orr McCormick, the mother of my of maternal great grandmother, Lucinda Bell Orr Frederick.  

     Nancy's first husband, William Morland Orr died at age thirty-five on February 11, 1849 in Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.   The Orr Family was living on a farm in Elkrun Township, probably land owned by Nancy's aunt, Jane Fife Cannon.   

     There were numerous family members in close vicinity to Nancy to assist with the farm and the children, ages twelve, eleven, nine, seven and four.  

     On the 1850 Ohio census there is a twenty-seven year old farmer, Elijah McCormick enumerated with the family.  

     Sometime in 1850, thirty-three year old Nancy married twenty-seven year old Elijah.  They had a daughter, Arabella McCormick in 1851.  Elijah McCormick died at age thirty on September 6, 1853.  

     On the 1860 Ohio census, son Matthew, is working the farm.  By 1870, Nancy and Arabella have moved to a house in New Lisbon Center, Columbiana County, Ohio.  Arabella has $900 in real estate, perhaps from the estate of her father.  On the 1880 Ohio census Nancy and Arabella are still living in Centre Township, New Lisbon, and Nancy is employed as a tailoress.  

     Arabella McCormick died at age thirty-eight on or about February 1889.  She had an estate probated in April 1889.  

     Nancy had three known children living in Columbiana County following Arabella's death.  Whether she continued to live in New Lisbon or was taken in by her married children is unknown.

     By 1900, she was enumerated with her daughter, my maternal great grandmother, Lucinda Bell Orr Frederick, in the Borough of Esplen, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.  

     And there stood my brick wall for over a decade.  When and where did Nancy die and where is she buried.  Neither she or Arabella have grave markers.  

     Then, this year on February 15, I hit a genealogy mother lode.  😀  I was noodling around in my Ancestry newspaper subscription using Alfred Frederick in Pittsburgh newspapers and up came Mrs. Alfred Frederick's mother's death.  Eureka!!!

     I was able to track down a website that gave me access to the Esplen record of deaths, unfortunately the years 1901 through 1903 are missing.  The death notice was valuable for the date of her death and that her body was transported back to Lisbon and buried there.  Her son, Matthew Thomas Cannon is buried in Lisbon Cemetery and my guess is that both Nancy and Arabella are also there without a grave stone.

Tombstone Tuesday--Matthew Thomas Orr

     In honor of the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, I am featuring the tombstone of my maternal Great-granduncle, Matthew Thomas Orr, of Columbiana County, Ohio.  Matthew was the son of William Morlan Orr and Nancy Cannon.  He was born in Columbiana County, Ohio on September 8, 1836, probably on the family farm in Elkrun Township.

     Matthew mustered in to the 104th Regiment, Company C, of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry at East Palestine, Unity Township, Columbiana County on August 2, 1862. He was appointed to the rank of sargeant on August 25, 1862, however, when he mustered out in Greensboro, North Carolina on June 17, 1865, he was listed as a private. Matthew suffered from a gunshot wound which he incurred during the war.


     There is a listing in the Columbiana County Death Record which records all county deaths from the Civil War...

"Matthew Orr, 5th Sarg from Elkrun Twp. as having been killed in action in Atlanta, Georgia. 104th Reg OVI Co C." Obviously this account of death was incorrect.

Matthew is listed in the 1890 Special Census for Civil War Veterans and Widows--


Matthew T. Orr, private, Co C 104 Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 7, 1862 to June 17, 1865.  Served 2 years, 10months, 6 days.  Gunshot wound.


Matthew died at age seventy-two on December 22, 1909 in Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio. He is buried beside his first wife, Mary Ellen Smith Orr in The Lisbon Cemetery, Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio.
