Tombstone Tuesday--George Henry and Sara VanGilder Hughes

My paternal grandparents, George Henry Hughes and Sarah (Sara) Margaret VanGilder Hughes are buried in Allegheny County Memorial Park, Allison Park, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

George Henry Hughes, son of John George Hughes and Elizabeth Ferdinande Olesen, was born on March 19, 1898 in West Hartlepool, Durham County, England. The Hughes Family arrived in the United States on May 19, 1906 and settled on the South Side of Pittsburgh. By 1915 they had moved down the Ohio River to Woodlawn, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. It was during George's time in Woodlawn that he met Sarah VanGilder.

Sarah Margaret VanGilder, daughter of George Ethelbert VanGilder and Jessica Pool, was born on March 2, 1898 in Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia. Following her husband's death in 1904, Jessie VanGilder ran a series of boarding houses in the Morgantown area. Around 1915, she moved to Woodlawn, Beaver County, Pennsylvania to open a boarding house for the steel workers at the new Jones Laughlin Steel Company.

George and Sarah married in Fairmont, Marion County, West Virginia on June 5, 1920.

George died on June 23, 1973 at South Pasadena, Pinellas County, Florida at the age of 75. Sarah lived to the age of 94. She died on September 2, 1992 at St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida.
