John Barnhiser and Susannah Brown Barnhiser of Maryland and Ohio

Back to the Henry J. Clabaugh biography for a sketch of his wife, Susannah Barnhiser's, family.  From census reports, John Barnhiser lists himself as having been born in Maryland, not Pennsylvania.

John Barnhiser married Susannah Brown on August 14, 1828 in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland.  I have not, to date, found any Maryland records of John and Susannah.  John's possible father could be John Barnhiser, Revolutionary War veteran and his first wife.  The Revolutionary Veterans file lists a second wife and children from that marriage.  Dated August 8, 1820, John lists his second favored wife age 40 and seven children ranging in age from 16-2 (1804-1818).

1840 Ohio Census
Eden Township, Seneca County, Ohio

Make up of family in 1840.  One son, under age five (George), one male age 30 (John) to under 40, one daughter under age 5 (Susannah), one daughter 5 and under 10 Sarah), one daughter 10 and under 15( Mary) and one woman 30 to under 40 Susannah).

The Barnhiser's stayed in Maryland, raising their growing family until about 1840, when records surface for the family in Ohio.  Their son, George W. Barnhiser was born in 1837 in Maryland according to the 1850 Ohio census.  William Barnhiser was born in 1839 in Ohio, again relying on the information in the 1850 Ohio census.

1844 Tax Record

1846 Tax Record
Big Spring Township, Seneca County, Ohio

1848 Tax Record
Big Spring Township, Seneca County, Ohio
Value 73

1849 Tax Record
Big Spring Township, Seneca County, Ohio
John was absent.  Valued at 89

These tax records are not valuable in terms of what John owned, except for the 1844 record.  The remainder are ditto marks down the page with a valuation, but on what?  He paid his proper taxes.

I always find a map helpful.  Highlighted in blue are the places John and Susannah lived.  Note how close their final land was in Big Spring Township, Seneca County to their last residence in Carey, Wyandot County, Ohio.

1850 Ohio Federal Census taken on September 3, 1850
Big Spring Township, Seneca County, Ohio

John Barnhiser, age 50, born in Maryland, a farmer

Mary (Susan?) Barnhiser, age 50, born in Maryland

Susan Barnhiser, age 15, born in Maryland, attended school in the past year

George Barnhiser, age 13, born in Maryland, attended school in the past year

William Barnhiser, age 11, born in Ohio, attended school in the past year

John Barnhiser, age 7, born in Ohio, attended school in the past year

Thomas Barnhiser, age 2, born in Ohio

Mary A. Barnhiser married Allen Bell on April 8, 1847 in Seneca County, Ohio

Sarah Ann Barnhiser married Henry C. Kime on July 2, 1850 in Seneca County, Ohio

There are Barnhisers enumerated in Seneca County and Wyandot County, Ohio.  None appear to be the family of John and Susan Barnhiser.  They are MIA in 1860.  The biography tells us that the Barnhisers moved to Carey in Wyandot about 1864.

The known children of John and Susannah Brown Barnhiser:
  1. George W. Barnhiser  1838-1854
  2. Benjamin Franklin Barnhiser 1849-1931
I have noticed that some of the birthdates are near what census reports show.  I have taken what is shown from death and burial records.  To date I have not located those records for Mary A. Barnhiser Bell.  It is also notable that the Barnhisers named all but one son after historical political figures.  I would guess that George W. is George Washington Barnhiser.

1870 Ohio Federal Census taken on July 19, 1870
Town of Carey, Wyandot County, Ohio

John Barnhiser, age 70, born in Maryland, a farmer, value of real estate $1400.00 and value of personal property $300.

William Barnhiser, age 29, born in Ohio, railroading

Thomas Barnhiser, age 23, born in Ohio, railroading

Frank Barnhiser, age 19, born in Ohio, railroad laborer

John Barnhiser, age 27, born in Ohio, railroad laborer

Ellen Barnhiser, age 19, born in Ohio, keeping house

Charles Rush, age 11, born in Ohio, attending school

Ellen Barnhiser is John's wife.  Charles Rush is ?

The 1877 Wyandot Directory lists John and his son, Thomas Barnhiser living in the same house, north side of Mud west of Vance.  Although he is deceased, he probably owned the house.  His wife Susan, is still living there.

Relying on the biography, John Barnhiser died on August 20, 1877 in Wyandot County, Ohio at at the age of 77.  To date I have not found any death or burial records for John.

Cropped and marked properties owned by the Barnhiser family in Carey, Wyandot County, Ohio.  The map is dated 1879.  The first map shows a section of town.  The rail road tracks cut through town and probably supplied the Barnhiser sons employment as shown on the 1870 census.  Red arrows mark the two properties.  The lower one is marked W.H. and T.J. Barnhiser and has a house on it.  The upper one is Thomas J. Barnhiser with no house.

The Barnhiser home is on Lot #40 Mud Street.  It is an described in the Wyandot Directory.  North of Mud and west of Vance.  The property owned by Thomas looks to be Lot  #10 on Findlay Street east of Clay Street.
