Michelangelo's final resting place is located in the Church of Santa Croce, Florence, Italy. He chose this spot, "...so that on Judgment Day, when the dead are raised, the first thing he would see through the opened doors of Santa Croce would be Brunelleschi's dome."1 The dome is the focal point of Florence's gothic cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo).
