Tombstone Tuesday--Sarah Houston Hill

Sarah Houston Hill, my paternal ggg grandmother, was the daughter of Purnell Houston and Mary Tumlinson or Tomlinson. She was born on January 28, 1791 in Delaware. The Houston family removed to Monongalia County, (West) Virginia and Sarah was married to Joseph Davidson Hill on September 22, 1814.

Joseph and Sarah raised seven children, the youngest was my paternal gg grandmother, Mary Louise Hill VanGilder. The Hill log cabin was located on what is now Stewartstown Road and VanGilder Street in Morgantown. The property was given to Joseph's father, Robert Hill, for his service in the American Revolution.

Sarah was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Morgantown, West Virginia and spent time weaving and spinning altar linen for the church. In a piece that I read about her it stated that family members have napkins made of the linen. I wonder where those are???

She died on March 18, 1872 at the age of 81 years in Monongalia County, West Virginia and is buried beside her husband in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Monongalia County, West Virginia.

  1. I love it that there is readable gravestone for your ggg grandmother. So many times they are unreadable, or just not there where you think they should be. She sounds like she was a great lady.
