Tombstone Tuesday--Sarah Houston Hill

Sarah Houston Hill, my paternal great great great grandmother, was the daughter of Purnell Houston and Mary Tomlinson. She was born on January 28, 1791 in Delaware. The Houston family removed to Monongalia County, (West) Virginia and Sarah was married to Joseph Davidson Hill on September 22, 1814.

Joseph and Sarah raised seven children, the youngest was my paternal great great grandmother, Mary Louise Hill VanGilder. The Hill log cabin was located on what is now Stewartstown Road and VanGilder Street in Morgantown. The property was given to Joseph's by his father, Robert Hill.

Sarah was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Morgantown, West Virginia and spent time weaving and spinning altar linen for the church. In a piece that I read about her it stated that family members have napkins made of the linen. I wonder where those are???

She died on March 18, 1872 at the age of 81 years in Monongalia County, West Virginia and is buried beside her husband in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Monongalia County, West Virginia.

Note:  There is a personal frustration and "grave" mistake on Find A Grave.  A second listing has been added for Joseph Davidson Hill listing him along with his wife, Sarah Houston Hill as buried at Mount Union Cemetery.  The Mount Union listings are incorrect.  It has been taken from a 2000 addendum to a list on US GenWeb for Mount Union Cemetery.

The photos of the Hill tombstones, taken by myself in 2004, were in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.  The information for Sarah Houston Hill was listed on Find A Grave in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in 2004 by Jennifer Selfridge.  I emailed her to get directions to the cemetery.

The parents of both Joseph Davidson Hill and Sarah Houston Hill were reinterred in Mount Union in 1928.  Those photos and the listings are mine.

  1. I love it that there is readable gravestone for your ggg grandmother. So many times they are unreadable, or just not there where you think they should be. She sounds like she was a great lady.
