Treasure Chest Thursday--Frederick Mechanical Pencil

Here's another interesting object from the estate of my maternal grandmother, Martha Marie Frederick Stark. As with some of the other items, I don't know if this is a Frederick or a Stark heirloom. My guess is Frederick.

This is a small mechanical pencil or lead holder as the lead is held in the tip. You pull on the end with the small ring and the leaded point pushes out--no twisting is involved. The pencil was probably used by a woman. When it is not extended, it is small enough to fit into a purse. When closed, the pencil measures 2 inches--extended it doubles in size to 4 inches in length.

There is beautiful engraving all around the outside, but I cannot see any karat gold mark. Often these pencils and pens made by the same company were 14 karat or gold filled.

The makers mark is hiding on a part of the pencil that is only visible when it is extended. It took a little detective work and I found out who A.L. Co was....Aikin Lambert Company. Waterman acquired Aikin Lambert around 1932.

From an online vintage pen catalogue: 7156: Aikin Lambert pencil: smooth gold filled, clutch action, 12.7 cm long, uses 2 mm thick lead; Gothic "C" engraved on barrel, 2 mm test mark near crown.
DATE: c. 1910 • CONDITION: VG-fine • $75

Tombstone Tuesday--Edna Mae Thomas Hughes

My stepmother, Edna Mae Thomas Hughes, joined the Hughes family in 1982 when she married my Dad—a second marriage for both. It was my good fortune to have known her for the past 28 years. She died on April 17, 2010. Edna had suffered, what we learned was a second stroke, back in March. She did come out of a coma and returned to her daughter's home. She put forth a valiant effort, but was unable to do anything physical and in particular eat and swallow her food.

We had a glorious celebration of her life in Pittsburgh, on a cloudy day with showers. She had wanted to return home to Pittsburgh and the rain....she got her wish.

Edna, we will miss your smile, your laughter, your youthful spirit. We all know you have found Dad and that you are both in heaven dancing and enjoying each other’s company again. You will remain in our hearts forever.

Rest in peace dear lady.

P.S. The date plate for Edna's birth year is incorrect on the tombstone.....something we will have to change.

Flipside On Hold

Sorry to say that I have not had the time of late to do much blogging. I think that this is the first time since Flipside began that I have not been an active participant in the blogging scene.

Several weeks ago, my stepmother died. We had the celebration of her life last Monday and I guess, truth be told, I have just not bounced back yet.

I do have a head full of ideas...just no stamina at present. If it weren't for Carol over at Reflections From the Fence and Flipside's weekly "flower power" on Wordless Wednesday, I would have little to offer of late.

Please be patient while Flipside is ON HOLD. I'll be back.
