This summer I am trying to pull together my genealogy information for my Old Hartlepool, England ancestors. Back in the summer of 2003, my brothers and I, made a memorable trip to Hartlepool. Having posted information on a genealogy site, I was very fortunate to meet a woman genealogist who was a major contributor to the documents I have. She also connected me with Hughes family cousins who lived in Hartlepool and we spent several enjoyable and information days together. The woman genealogist, Heather 💖, and I are still friends twenty-two years later and keep in touch by email.
Edward Storey (Story) and Lucy Metcalfe are my paternal great great great great grandparents. Both were born in Thirsk, Yorkshire, England.
Edward, the son of Thomas Storey and Jane Ramshaw was probably born in December, 1803. There is a baptism record for him dated December 19, 1803.
To date I have not found a birth or baptism record for Lucy Metcalfe. Her parents are also unknown. From the census records, Lucy was born 1802-1803 in Thirsk, Yorkshire, England.
Edward Storey and Lucy Metcalfe, both in their early twenties, married on October 3, 1824 at the Parish Church, Thirsk, Yorkshire, England.

Thirsk Market Place Painting dated earlier than 1857 From the Thirsk Tourist website |
Thirsk was known for its good grazing pastures and center for sheep, cattle and horses. The Market Place was the central gathering place for commerce.

One of the first records, dated January 23, 1825, is the baptism record of Edward and Lucy's firstborn and my paternal great great great grandfather, John Storey. This is the only record I have found from 1825 until the family removed to Old Hartlepool, England. Edward was employed as a weaver in Thirsk perhaps weaving wool from the shirred sheep.
While living in Thirsk, the Storey family grew by two additional children; Elizabeth Storey born about 1830 and Thomas Storey born about 1831.
Sometime between 1831 and 1836 the Storey Family removed to The Headland, Old Hartlepool, England. At that time there was just Hartlepool. Several decades later the original Hartlepool was called Old Hartlepool since a new area was developed and was named West Hartlepool. Today all areas are called Hartlepool, although many still do refer to "Old Hartlepool" as The Headland.

Edward Storey death record |
I am certain there may have been other children born to Edward and Lucy between 1831 and 1837. There is a record of a son, Edward Storey born in 1833 and died in Hartlepool in 1834, that could be their son.
A son, Edward Storey, born about 1837 is listed on the 1841 England census as having been born in Durham County, England; however I have not found a birth or baptism record for him.

Edward has changed his occupation to fish monger. Fishing was a primary occupation in Hartlepool in the early to mid 1800's. Edward, as a fishmonger, was the person who cleaned, prepared and sold the fish. My paternal great great great grandfather, John Storey, was a blacksmith apprentice.
Chapel Street was one street back from the Hartlepool Wall. It would be a short distance for Edward to pick up the fish he was planning to sell each day.
Ann Metcalfe is probably Lucy's younger sister. I have not been able to trace the Metcalfe family using online resources.

Lucy, at age sixty-one, has taken over the family business of fish monger. Her son, William is employed as a pilots assistant a job that assisted the ship pilots to safely sail ships in and out of the port of Hartlepool. Youngest son, James followed in his Uncle John's footsteps becoming a blacksmith. Perhaps he was apprenticed to his Uncle.

Lucy Story, Head, Widow, age 68, Yorkshire, Thirsk.
William, Story, Son, Unmarried, age 30, Pilot's Assistant, born Durham, Hartlepool.
There is this death record for "a" Lucy Storey. She died in Hartlepool at age sixty-eight using the birth year from this record. The birth town is in Durham County, not Thirsk and her birth year is later than census accounts. I have seen another death record on Ancestry in 1874 with Lucy dying at age sixty-eight in Stockton, also located in Durham County.
I have not done any further research of the living adult children of Edward and Lucy except for my connection, John Storey. Additional work has to be done.
