This is a collection that I have named, "The Hughes Hankies." They were given to me when I was younger (that would be the 1950's ;-] ) by one of my paternal Great Grandmother's, Elizabeth Olesen Hughes.
Great Grandma Hughes, also known as Noonie, lived with her son and my paternal grandparents, George Henry and Sarah VanGilder Hughes in Bellevue, Pennsylvania. As a youngster, when I visited, Great Grandma would always give me a hankie to take home. She felt that a young lady always had to have a handkerchief. She also gave me the oriental lacquer box and the sachet and I have kept them together for over 50 (yikes!) years. The sachet still has it's original perfume scent.
Back in the late 1990's, after having researched my genealogy for about 5 years, I decided to begin giving away the hankies as the "something old" to each of my Hughes cousins or their fiancee's before the wedding day. Sadly, I know I have missed a couple over the years. As my cousin's children slowly begin to marry, I am now sending a little piece of Hughes History to the next generation.

That is a nice tradition Linda. I never had a hankie and in grade three I lost my row points every day for not showing I had my hankie. My row didn't like that. I just couldn't ask my mom to buy one as she could barely feed us at the time.
